Dr Kevin O’Gorman - Talking Hospitality
The ‘Talking Hospitality Collection’ was created after Dr. Kevin O’Gorman of the University of Strathclyde Business School approached the Spoken Word Project. Dr. O’Gorman’s academic interests lie with the history and philosophy of hospitality and tourism. The collection was supported by a grant from the Higher Education Academy: Hospitality, Leisure, Sport and Tourism Network and contains over 50 radio and television programmes from the BBC archives.
The collected media was also used to create eight video podcasts on subjects ranging from hospitality in Roman Pompeii to the hospitality related musings of the French philosopher Jacques Derrida. The content of these podcasts was also supplemented with commentary from a range of leading Hospitality, Leisure, Sport and Tourism academics from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow Caledonian University and Oxford Brookes University.
The potential contributions of this project to the community of those involved in hospitality, leisure, sport and tourism education are considerable; this project enables the addition of multimedia items to the mix of resources they already use. In addition to encouraging the use of contemporary technologies these resources help to bring students into closer touch with the realities of contemporary serious debate. Encouraging students, most of whom are not Radio 4 listeners, towards becoming participants in the wider ‘intelligent conversation of the nation’ is an important general educational goal in itself.
The 8 Talking Hospitality Podcasts are listed below, with links to the full podcasts. Where media clips are used, links are given to the full item used - usually BBC radio and television programmes but including other Spoken Word audio and video materials.
These resources have been made available through the JISC/NSF funded programme Digital Libraries in the Classroom through The Spoken Word project and by a further small grant from the Higher Education Academy (Hospitality, Leisure, Sport and Tourism Network). You must register as a user of Spoken Word Services to access them. Registration for educational use is quick, simple and free. This procedure protects both you and the rights holders of the materials under the terms of the user agreement cited on the form.
