SBH:Mecca and the Arabs: a talk in the series From the Four Corners. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- PRE:Describes climate and landscape of Mecca, and the rather excessive hospitality of the Arabs. Picture of their daily routine which is dictated by the five prayer times, and the climate. Contrasts to be found in different types of homes. Only drawback to the temperate climate is the lack of water. Picture of Mecca as the "hub of the Islamic world", and of the annual pilgrimage in which the King rides: this year speaker will be amongst his cavalcade. Contrast of Mecca with other tourist centres - there is no frivolity at all. Tribute to the King Iba Sa'ud, who since he assumed the throne forty years ago has brought about many reforms, notably the pacifying of the nomad tribes. Enlarges on some of the differences between Arabian and European way of life. Speaker's home is in Mecca.
