Duff (110) describes celebrations, processions and various incidents in the liberation celebrations at Cherbourg. Narrator introduces a French Commandant who describes how his French commandos (165) were allowed to be the first to lead an attack on D-day: tribute to his troops and anecdote about an old man who begged to be allowed to fight alongside them. Snagge quotes a tribute from a General to the previous speaker. Melville (200) describes, against sound of bells, Mass at Alberville with actuality of singing (225) inside church against commentary and sound of nearby guns. Wills recalls the hospitality of a farmhouse in Normandy (230) and the joy of the people at the sight of Allied gliders. Memories of the 19 people who after a bombardment rushed "into the arms of the embarrassed Tommies." Marvels at the lack of resentment against Allies for bombarding their homes though quotes case of a woman who mourned her lost "belle maison". LP25852 : Side 2 (of 3) Actuality of children singing Marsellaise with commentary by Wills, and soldiers joining in the singing. Halton (120) describes the attitude of French towards the Boches, and towards Petain and De Gaulle. Dunnett commentary (170) on ceremony at Cherbourg to welcome Allies, including speech by the Mayor (translated by narrator). Halton (200) in Caen mourns the wholesale destruction of the town, paying tribute to spirit of inhabitants, mentions miraculous escape of the great church and school which sheltered 2,000 people. Picture of the weeping Resistance leader as the flag of France was hoisted in the Square. Gillard in a Normandy village describes the liberated population on their way to church (255) against the sound of bells. LP25851 : Side 3 (of 3) Gillard at Bayeux describes the celebrations. Stresses that though Maquis work helps Allies it has also been a nuisance, though a welcome one to the French Civilians.
